I joined the retail world in June of 1997 working for a clothing/home goods store. I thought it was a temporary gig, something to hold me over till I was able to get a "real job." I left that job after about 6 months, in exchange for that supposed "real job" at a home warranty company. After a few years of sitting behind a desk, I found myself working a part time office job at the local university, and laid off from a local body shop. I needed a job, bad, so off I went to an electronics store, and was hired on the spot (thanks in large part to my friends recommendation). I started as a customer service rep, doing returns and exchanges. I was offered a full time position after 3 months. I took a leadership position in the operations department 6 months after going full time. Here it is over 10 years since that first retail job, and I have held many different positions in different stores at different companies. I have seen a lot in my retail travels, I have met amazing people, had horrible managers, and I wouldn't trade any of it for the world, because I got some awesome stories out of the deal!
I decided to start this blog to share my experiences, prove to the people with the "real jobs" that retail is a REAL job, and share some tips for both employees and customers from my experiences as a retail employee/supervisor/manager/trainer.
I am currently listing topics and funny stories...so I will return soon with some of these stories...stay tuned!
